Hilary Duff segues into more
grown-up role finding 'The
Perfect Man' in her new film
Hilary Duff may still only
be 17, but she's already
tackling more adult themes
in her new film, "The
Perfect Man."
"It's basically a comedy,
but it's quite complex and
there's a lot going on,
especially with my character
and her relationship with
her mother," says Duff, star
of the TV series "Lizzie
McGuire" and the hit movie
"A Cinderella Story."
"There's the love/hate thing
between her and her mother,
and then there's also a love
story. It's not just a
simple teen story."
Duff plays Holly Hamilton, a
teen with a big problem in
the boyfriend department.
The twist is that it's not
Holly but her single mom,
Jean (Heather Locklear), who
is causing the problem.
Every time Holly settles
down in a new town and
begins to make friends, Jean
breaks up with her latest
loser boyfriend and is soon
moving the family. Holly's
solution to the problem is
to invent a secret admirer,
based on the handsome
restaurateur Uncle Ben
(Chris Noth) of her best new
friend.
"I really liked the idea of
playing Holly because
there's absolutely nothing
of me in her," says the
actress/singer. "When I
first read it, I just
thought, I don't even relate
to this girl. I don't have a
family like that, or a
mother like that, and I
don't have those problems,
so I could just have fun
playing a completely
different person.
"And in the beginning, it's
really Holly who's holding
the family together more
than the mother, so she's a
pretty strong, interesting
character, and it didn't
really matter to me if I
could relate to her or not."
Though Duff can't relate to
Holly's predicament, she can
relate to juggling a lot of
responsibility. The teen
recently wrapped filming on
"Material Girl" with older
sister Haylie Duff. Before
heading out on a summer
concert tour, she'll
complete filming a reprise
of her role in the sequel to
2003's "Cheaper by the
Dozen."
Her Still Most Wanted tour
is set for this summer. In
the midst of the tour,
she'll appear Aug. 15 on
NBC's "The Tonight Show With
Jay Leno," Aug. 17 on Fox
broadcast of the annual Teen
Choice Awards and make an
Aug. 18 return to "Today."
Until the run of appearances
begins, Duff is busy
promoting "The Perfect Man,"
which brought a new friend,
Heather Locklear.
Duff says she "loved her
right away. We went out to
dinner together, and it was
an instant, natural
friendship, so everything
you see in the film between
mother and daughter was easy
for us to play because of
that."
"And she's so great to hang
out with, as she has all
these wonderful stories, and
we'd talk for hours on the
set," Duff says. "Basically
she has this really good
energy about her, so I'd
love to work with her again
sometime." |
